Q & A
Subject: Visa and medical insurance questions.
Question: I am an American writer owning a home and living full-time in France. I do not have a long-term visa or carte-de-sejour because it is no longer possible for individual Americans living but not working in France to buy medical insurance in France. If I go back to the USA will I be in danger of not being allowed to return to my home (the only one I have) in france? Am I required by US law to return once a year to the States? These are simple questions, but I am having a great deal of trouble getting answers to them. Any help or direction will be enormously appreciated. many thanks!
Answer:
Patricia,
You can by health insurance from a private company. Try this link, http://www.globalinsurancenet.com. It is to one of my sponsors. If you are in France now, go to a local insurance agency and see if you can buy health insurance. Rereading your questions it seems you might have already done that, then your best bet will be to buy international insurance in the states or on-line.
No, there is no US law that says you need to go back to the US once a year. As for returning to France, most times the boarder guard will not even look at you passport let alone stamp it. So there is no way for them to know how long you where in France and for that matter that you own a house. In short the risk is small that you would have a problem getting back into France. Jeff
