Q & AMoving/Living/WorkingFinancial Requirements to Live in France

Question: I guess what I need to know if the yearly financial requirements of France for someone to live in France as a resident...I will have Social Security - but only a total of $9000/year - and I don't know if this qualifies...do you need an additional $$number in a bank? I've tried to contact the Consulates and Embassy of France and cannot get through or cannot get an answer...thought I would try you...

Answer: I don't know the minimum financial requirements to live in France as a resident. I looked around on the Internet and nowhere was an exact sum given, just that you will need enough to support yourself.
Knowing the economics of France I would say that $9000/year is enough to live on. That of course depends where you live, but lets say you live in a small town or village, your rent will be for a two-bedroom apartment $300 to $400 plus another 50 for utilities that leaves 350 or so for food and such.
It's doable the question is, will the person making the decision about your application think it is enough? I can't say. My suggestion would be to have a letter, in French from your bank stating how much money you have this should help. Remember all the French government is looking at is will you become a burden to them. If you can persuade them otherwise you will be okay.
