SeminarsUnderstand the French!

Join us for a wine and cheese celebration of Franco-American cultural differences

By Harriet Welty Rochefort
Author of French Toast and French Fried
Webmaster www.understandfrance.org

Why can't I touch my fruit at the market before I buy it?
What do you do when a salesperson is rude?
How do you slice Roquefort?
Why are the French "ungrateful"?

If you know the answers to these questions, you're probably doing just fine in France !

If not - and life in France mystifies, intrigues or frustrates you and you'd like to get more out of your stay, join Harriet Welty Rochefort for a humorous and informative talk on Franco-American cultural differences. A freelance journalist and author, Harriet has written articles on France for The Atlanta Constitution, Time magazine, the International Herald Tribune and France Discovery Guide, taught journalism at the prestigious Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris and lectured extensively on Franco-American cultural differences to groups including ElderHostel and the International Media Seminar. She currently writes a monthly Letter from Paris for the Paris Pages website and is working on a third book.

As a longtime resident of France, she'll be happy to share her French experiences with you, from how to cut Brie to how to put a smile on the face of sourest salesperson and how to get what you want even when the answer is "non".

In researching French Fried, which six-star chef Alain Ducasse called " lively and hilarious ", Harriet explored the world of cheese. She'll share her adventures with you - and serve a delicious assortment of some of France's most well-known (Camembert, Pont l'Eveque) and lesser known (Boulette d'Avesnes) cheeses with a selection of French wines at the buffet lunch following her talk.
