Message: Hello, We are planning to move to France, Paris area. We would like to buy a house. Can we get financing for the house? Which bank is the right bank for it? We have perfect credit history in US, is it a factor for any banks in France? What downpayment is required for non EU citizens? How all this work in France? Thank's for any advise.

Message Hi George Yes, you can take out a mortgage with a French bank but what we did was refinance (second mortgage) our house in the states and use some of the money to buy our little house in France and the rest to pay off the first mortgage on the house in the states. This has worked out well because we did it before the euro went up. If we had taken a French mortgage to buy the house in France our payments would have increased 25-30% because of the exchange. As we are still working in the states and on a dollar economy it would have been to our disadvantage. We are very happy with our decision to buy our house in the Languedoc. It was remarkably easy. Good luck! Edie
