Subject: No worries--you probably will survive
Date: Saturday, July 23, 2005
Name: Rebecca
Message: If I can survive, you definately can too! I moved to a small town in France a month and a half ago getting frases like 'hello' 'sorry' and 'thank you' mixed up. I really knew nothing about what I was getting into. In this town in the Rhone Valley there are very few people who will even speak one word of English with me and actually are a bit predjudiced towards US citizens. Yes, people can be a bit rude, but to say the least, I have learned quite a bit of French very quickly. The two things going for me were that I am here with my French boyfriend and I have previosly been an expat in several different countries. If you have never lived in a foreign country before, just expect a very rocky ride for the first few months. It is normal to love everything (the honeymoon period) and to appreciate the differences for the first two to three weeks, but it is also normal to hate everything and to dream of home during the fourth week. I just went through that period and it was not pleasant. Expect to feel very lonely and misunderstood but know that it will be over soon. As long as you know that these ups and downs are very normal, you will be fine. Oh, and also I have found that, although people may make a biting comment when they first hear that I am from the US, it is just a bit of teasing and people are actually curious to learn more about my life and the US.

Good luck! I know that you can enjoy it if you try to think positively during the low times.

Best regards, Rebecca
