I have a house in the south of France near Avignon. Since my French is not excellent, I have not been able to find out whether mosquitos are as prevalent in this location as they are here in the northeastern US! Are window screens used? If so do they sell them at DYI stores? Is the story of blue shutters keeping mosquitos at bay a myth? Thanks for any info anyone can give.

Hello Penelope, Like you, we are renovating an old mas, in St. Remy. We had planned to put windowscreens on most of the windows, but the price quoted by our contractor seemed high, so we are waiting till we move in next summer and then will look around for the best deal. Looks like they are expensive, and, I think, ugly. Doing without might be a problem, however; we spend our first ten days in our house in Sept/Oct, and there was an incredible infestation of nasty little misquitoes. Unlike the rather benign ones we find here in Southern California, the French ones were VERY aggressive, stung many times very quickly before finding a proper vein. My poor wife suffered the entire time, though I found I was impervious to their attacks.
If you like I will g et some details on the screens for you. They mount at the top of the windows, and pull down like a window shade. As I said, ugly but utilitarian.
brgds.

If you haven't already found what you're looking for, try LeRoy Merlin at Le Pontet (just outside Avignon). They also sell the mosquito net by the meter, so you can cut it to fit any sized window. The ready made kits are also available, but horribly overpriced. If you are renovating anyway, you can tack the mosquito net to the exterior of your windows.
Also, don't forget the plug-in RAID protectors against mosquitoes. My daughter has a severe reaction to mosquitoes. We always use these plug in devices (sold everywhere - LeClerc, Auchan, LeRoy Merlin, etc.) as they release an odor (not noticed by us) that mosquitoes don't like. You can plug them in and leave the windows open - they work.

Dear Thea, Thanks so much for your response. I am very familiar with LaPeyre so will certainly check it out. I bought a run-down farmhouse in 2001 and have renovated it completely. We moved in last November but still use it only for occassional visits. We are going in a week and since I have never been there in the summer I've been worried about bugs and open windows at night. My hope is to move there permanently or at least for half the year within the next few years. Do you live in the area? My house is in Chateaurenard, between St. Remy and Avignon. Thanks again for responding. Penny LeGrande

Hi Penelope,
Yep, buzzy things are a nuisance in France as well. Screens aren't as common as in the US, but are available, if expensive. Try the local DIY centers, or go online to Lapeyre.fr and look at the selection under "moustiquaires". To me, it'd be worth whatever cost!
Hope you're enjoying the south of France...are you a holiday-home owner, or living there permanently? Would love to hear your story!
Best regards, Thea
