Subject: Sony stereo receiver
Date: Monday, July 04, 2005
Name: Kevin
Message: My French wife and I are moving to France from TX and I would like to know if I import my Sony stereo receiver that I use here in the States, would it pick up the radio stations in France? I have heard that electronics are expensive there...it may be cheaper to ship it than buy a new one. Thank you for any help.

Message Kevin,

It's David again. Of course you can bring your Sony receiver but it will tune in French stations, not Texas ones. I brought mine and it works just fine.

First check and see if your receiver has a switch in the back to go from 110V to 220V. If it does, cut off the plug with a scissors and go to the hardware store (like Leroy Merlin) and buy a French plug. Wire strippers are handy to have for this. If not, you will have to buy a 100 watt (minimum) step-up transformer. They are available all over the Internet -- but buy them BEFORE you leave for France. I have six, and am running a U.S. Netgear wireless router and wireless telephone off them just fine.

Message I would leave all your electronics behind. It's a big hassle and expensive to take electronics in my experience. You can buy a very nice set up here about the same price with less fuss.
