Subject: Moving to Strasbourg
Date: Sunday, August 06, 2006
Name: Stephanie
Message: Hello, I am 25 and moving to Strasbourg to live with my boyfriend. I am looking for some English speaking friends that live there and can help me out with suggestions on what to bring, temperature, nice neighborhoods, and all around advice. Maybe in exchange for some tips I could bring you a little something you miss and can only get in the states? Thanks

Message I have been here for about a month now and I am enjoying myself. We don't have a car but the tram and buss are so connvinient that we don't miss it. It is a bit difficult getting used to the french red tape ....we ordered internet two weeks ago and I am still waiting. we live in Kruteneau and really like the neighborhood. let me know if you would like to exchange contact info.

Message Hello. I know that it has been awhile since you wrote but I am a 26 year old living in Strasbourg with my husband. We have been here for 2 months now and are enjoying it so far. Would love to hear how you are liking Strasbourg.

Message Hehe Stephanie, being from Texas I never saw snow till I came here... I remember it was 9 at night and I ran out in the street in my PJs to play with it!

Well I think this winter is going to be really cold.. the summer was barely hot and last year when that happened the winter was very very cold! Sometimes it can get so cold to where the water pipes freeze. Today (Sept 8) I consider it cold but it starts to get really cold about the end of November.. you WILL need gloves, hat and scarves.. and not those wimpy thin scarves you buy like in Texas for fashion.

This year we had snow as late as March, it snowed to where it was knee-deep which was quite odd but really fun (I love snow). It gets down to about -10 (or 14F) one or two days out of the year (in a really worst case) usually I think the winter is about 30F to 20F.

You'll also notice in the winter that the sun goes down really really early about 4 or 5 I can't remember but I do remember it really threw me off.

Usually snows around the end of December up until February. By the way in December be sure to take advantage of all the Christmas markets you'll find in the Alsace they are a nice place to buy gifts, food (mmm nutella crepes) and just hang out for the atmosphere.

Message Peanut butter? that's good advice because i recently fell in love with the organic kind..... i just got my long stay visa! only six more days. oh yeah, have either of you spent a winter there? how cold is it? like snow all the time cold or more rain cold. i am from the desert and winter is a foreign topic in itself!

Message Ugh but the peanut butter here is so tiny and expensive! It costs 5 euros for about half the size of a normal container of PB you get for 2 bucks in the US. I have my mom mail me some and ICED TEA bags.. oh iced tea bags. They don't sell the right stuff here... and the only "iced tea" you find is some nestea peach flavored stuff in a bottle and I can't stand peaches. >.<

Sprite is really good here though.. more flavor.. I miss coca cola blak when they had it it was awesome.. macaroni and cheese doesn't exist here either.. and I miss beef jerky. You really don't think about such little things till you spend a bit of time.

Message Hi- I was away for a bit- hmm- things to bring-good peanut butter? okay but you can get skippy here. I am always shocked at the things I miss and grab onto when I am over here- like Diet Coke- cant get enough of it here- in the US- dont touch the stuff. I went to a salon today- kinda disappointing- so expensive compared to NYC- ok but there are many wonderful things here too! I think we are moving to Molsheim outside strasbourg 10 min in the next couple months but we are here now-hope to be in touch- good luck with move-we are having a fabulous Indian summer in Sept

Message Hey guys! Cool Val another in Colmar?

Well I went back to teh US for 2 months in an attempt to move back there permanently but that kinda fell through.. I remembered some thinsg I wanted but I lacked the money >.<

Some things that I wish I would have bought are a surgeprotector (one with several outlets) for my things that do work here with an adapter (basically anything that converts power to a lower level) like my laptop, battery charger, camera etc. I'm ok but I gotta take turns using the one adapter I have to charge everything and I did manage to find the whole plug piece for my laptop with a EU end.

Anyway you ladies feel free to e-mail me! I am posting my e-mail address here in a non-email format like "at" instead of "@" and "dot" instead of "." so maybe I'm less likey to get spam who knows? O_o Especially you Val since we live in the same city!

Message Hey girls great to hear from you! I am coming out the second week of September. Have either of you discovered anything during your move that you wished you had done differently? You know like a "oh i wish I had brought that" moment?
