Subject: bilingual schools in Avignon and vicinities ?
Date: Friday, April 21, 2006
Name: Claire
Message: We've been french expats in USA for 7 years and planning for a transfert back to Avignon, France. I can't find anywhere on the internet any bilingual school closed enough to Avignon. Have you heard of some? (oh and my daugthers are aged 3 to 9) And have you heard of any American Playgroup in this area?

Thank you for your help...

Message Hello Claire,

I live 30 min from Avignon, near St. Remy de Provence, am American, and have been here for just over a year. I have 3 children, ages 5, 7 and 6 months.

I am also interested in forming an english speaking playgroup, and already have several english speaking friends with children who come and play with ours.

I have also just launched my business, "Apprendre L'Anglais en s'amusant!" I offer private English classes to (mainly french) children, ages 5 - 19. I have several private classes going and also plan to do "stages." I would also like to expand my service to teaching bilingual English/French children more advanced English and reading skills.

Please feel free to email me if you would like to organize a play date: [email protected]

Good luck settling into your new home.

Jane

Message Claire - I, personally, would go with your alternative idea. If the children are going to stay in France, it may be easier on them if they stay in a French public school (thinking of their future). If they are going to go back to the U.S.A., that would be a different story.

As to English, there are plenty of English speaking organizations in and around Avignon. I'm not sure if there are any children's play groups, but you could start one. Your role may switch at home as you have said. Great idea.

I have a bunch of guests arriving tomorrow and staying for 10 days, so I will be their "driver" all around Provence. Once they leave, I can take the time to find the name of the English section school in Avignon. The one I am thinking of is a primary school. I think there is a college also. I will do my best to get back to you after my guests have gone.

Message Hi Lori,

Thank you for your answer. First I looked around for middle/high schools with international sections. Then I checked the private schools, the alternative schools... But the closest I have heard about are in Aix or Montpelier. The goal is for the girls to keep talking english fluently of course. I unfortunatly have not been able to find the school you talked about in Avignon.

I am at the point now when I am trying to alternative solution, like speaking english at home (this will be at bit unatural to me as my job here was to make that the girls would be fluent in French!), finding playgroups or associations where we could meet Americans, having an aupair (if the housing is good for us!)...

Thank you for your time

Message What type of bilingual school are you looking for?? American curriculum / French curriculum with some English sections?? If it is the latter, there is at least one in Avignon. My daughter attends school in Mazan, not Avignon so I do not have direct experience with the school. I'm confident you can find the information through Avignon education websites.

If you are looking for an American curriculum, there are none here. I live about 30 minutes from Avignon and have been asked this question numerous times.

If you don't have luck finding the listing of public schools in Avignon (the one with the English section is a public school), post again and I will get it for you.

Good luck to you.
