Dear Fellow Americans
I am building a house in Lyon, France and would like to know if you share the same "shock" as I am.
My architect is also the "building inspector" meaning that they is no government appointed building officials to inspect the construction if it is according to building regulation and safety. In short, if my builders teams up with my architect and decide to brings me for a ride, then I am dead.
As an example, the calculation of load on the weight bearing walls. I feel that it is not strong enough but they say that it is perfect. Any suggestions from guys out there about this issue? Independent building inspectors?

Why don't you ask a second Architect for his/her opinion. Check out your current Architect's SIRET number and work history.
If you are worried about the weight, get a second or third opinion to compare. Devis's are normally free. When we renovated, we were also concerned about weight. Our Architect had our Macon put in a new support beam. Perhaps you can have them do this, even if THEY think it isn't necessary. It might put your mind at ease. It wasn't all that expensive either.
Yes, we found the lack of overall inspections in many areas of business quite odd. In some ways the government meddles in the most minute areas of life here, in others, they leave you on your own with seemingly no where to turn.
