Subject: Truth about Long Term Stay Visa
Date: Saturday, March 11, 2006
Name: Dwight
Message: I am being transfered to Europe to work in Denmark, but I am a rotational employee (28 days on / 28 off. My wife and I want to live in France. How important is the long term stay visa? I mean can't we just take a quick trip to London every 3 months and get another 3 month stay? Or is is necessary for other things like apartment rentals and such. Thanks

Dwight

Message Good luck. If you need to communicate on any other issues relating to life in France, feel free to email me at [email protected]

We've been here for five years. We are in the southeast of France, in Provence. You may choose to be further north for logistical purposes, although with the TGV, most of Europe is at your fingertips.

Message Lori, You RULE. Thank you for all of your advice. I will go to Bangkok and see if I can get it all done there. I owe you a bottle of wine.

Message Is there a French Consulate in Thailand near you?

If there is, you should be able to work with them and the U.S. Consulate to get the Visa processed in Thailand.

I have done this for a Visa do Saudi Arabia. I am American, living in France, but I did not have to go to America for the Visa. It was handled totally by the Saudi Arabian Consulate in Paris.

Give it a try, maybe it will work for you too.

Message Lori, Thanks for your reply. We are Americans. the problem is that we are going to be moving from Thailand to France, and not from America. So, the option for getting the long stay visa is, at least for now, not available. Here in Thailand we do what are called visa runs, or quick trips out of and back into the country every three months. I thought perhaps we could just do the same thing in France until we get a chance to fly back to the states to apply for the Long Stay Visa. Ok well thanks for your advice.

Message Are you Americans or EU citizens?

France considers the amount of days you reside in this country each year when determining residency status. They don't really care if you leave for a month and then return. It is the total time spent here they care about.

If you are EU citizens the rules are different.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't get the Shengen Long Stay Visa for France if you intend to rent an apt. here. You won't be able to get a residency Carte de Sejour without the Visa. Its easy to obtain, just contact your local French Consulate in the States.

Since you mentioned going to London, I'm not sure if you are American or EU. Anyway, the Shengen Long Stay Visa for France is supposed to be obtained BEFORE you arrive in France.

Contact your nearest French Consulate. They can spell it out for you.

Good luck.
