HI, my family are going to be moving to France soon but we don't want to pay the high rates to call the USA using France Telecom. I have been on the expatica website and have found a Telecoms co. called UK Telecom which have good rates to the USA and appear to have no hidden charges. Are there any other companies worth looking at?

Several companies now offer free, unlimited calls to the US with a 30¬/month subscription that includes DSL internet & TV. Try Free, Alice, and possibly Tele2 and Neuf Telecom. Cheapest way to go since you don't have to pay a France Telecom line at all.

I use SKYPE too. Computer to computer and to landlines. It can often depend on the time of day you use the service as there can be literally, millions of people online making calls. There can be some breaking up. But, I have also used it several times in the early morning - French time - with NO break up at all, perfect connection. Very cheap.

I use a combination of Telerabais (http://www.telerabais.com/index2.php), and Skype (http://www.skype.com/).
Telerabais is like all those 10-10-220 numbers in the US - you dial an access number and then the charges just come as an extra page on your FT bill. Costs are 1.4 cents/min nights and weekends, and 2.8 centes per minute during the day. No connection fees to pay.
Skype is a program that you can use to make FREE phone calls from computer to computer (provided the other person has downloaded it as well). They also now offer video service, so if you have a webcam, it's almost like being in the same room as the person you're talking too. You can make calls to landlines as well with skype, but I've never done that. You can also get a US phone number with them, so that your friends/family back home can call you as if you were in the US, and thus not pay international charges. So there's a lot of options with skype - I only use it to make computer to computer calls, but I've been really happy with them.
