Date: Sunday, January 29, 2006

Message: Has anyone living in France now used a container to ship your household goods to France? Who did you use? How much did they cost? Would you recommend them / use them again?

Thanks

Message Joel: I guess that would be a matter of opinion on the car. We paid 900 U.S. dollars for it to be shipped from San Diego to Le Havre where it cleared customs and I picked it up.

I did have to go through all kinds of inspections with the DRIRE and the MINE. The biggest problem for me, was Toyota France. The people I dealt with did not seem to be familiar with the requirements in registering a foreign vehicle in France - even though they were supposed to be.

Would I do it again - NO. Was it expensive to get it registered - if memory serves, I paid somewhere around 400 Euros all total.

We did end up buying a new car here in France as we couldn't get insurance on the Toyota until it was registered. Since we HAD to drive, we bought a Renault and am not sorry for that. It holds much more cargo than the Toyota.

You can find all types / price ranges of vehicles here.

Message Thanks Lori, I'll check into them. You say you shipped a car too? I heard that a US car has to go through some changes when it gets to France to meet the French safety standards and such. Did you have to do this? Was it costly? I was thinking about shipping my car as well, but I heard it wasn't worth it in the long run. Is that true?

Message We used North American International from San Diego, California to France. Can't remember who they partnered with here in France for the delivery and unpacking service. We used a different service to ship the car.

All went very very well. We did have a couple of items that were damaged. Put in claims and they were paid within 30 days - no questions asked.

We filled out a VERY complete inventory list with current replacement values. This is what the company my husband works for offered. They paid the bill. I can't remember the exact amount, but it was around 3000 dollars. The container was a fairly large one, but, sorry, I can't remember the exact size.

Would we use them again. Yes, in a heart beat.
