This February, 2006, will make 2 years since my French husband and I got married. We have been residing in Miami, Florida since that time. Now we are considering moving to Europe and I am clueless with what needs to be done for me to legally work in Europe. We declared our marriage with the French consulate and received a livret de famille a long time ago. So, my question is, what do I need to do to work there at this stage and how long after marriage to Americans get French citizenship? Lastly, if we were to get divorced, would all my European rights be stripped or is there something I can do to secure them? Thanks

Marisa,
We are in a similar situation. I am British and my husband is American and we live in France. I have the same rights as a French citizen due to EU regulations so I didn't need to do anything. For my husband we obtained a Carte de Sejour that allows him to work/live/have health insurance. You don't need citizenship to work but I don't know what happens in case of divorce, maybe getting citizenship would be easier once you are already in France?
The Carte de Sejour was easy. We took the translated copy of birth certificate/marriage certificate copies of passport for both of us, copies of tax declaration, and two photos.
