Subject: Wedding, taxes and prenuptial agreement
Date: Tuesday, November 29, 2005
Name: Iris
Message: Hello all, I am French and I will soon marry my American boyfriend. We have no intention to move to the States in a near future, and the wedding will be contracted in France. I learned recently that America applies double taxation to all its citizens AND their spouses, if they happen to be married under a "community of goods" regime (here I am translating directly from French, I mean "communauté des biens" : the bride and groom declare that they will share everything in their married life). To avoid this (I do not want to pay taxes to France AND the US, while living in France, and not filing for American citizenship), I was told to contract a prenuptial agreement. My only question is: which kind of prenuptial agreement should I get? Are there some legal provisions my wedding contract should include, and some that are not so necessary? Did somebody go through the same process and could advise me on this? Thanks a lot in advance! Iris

Message I file my taxs as 'married, but filing seperately'. Since my husband is not american, and I am filing seperately, we do not claim his earnings. I did have to get him a tax ID number just so I could file as being married.

Message Thank you for your input, Cris. I know that France does not have a double taxation system. Logically, the French administration should not tax any income earned in America. But does your husband earn any money in France that could be taxed in the States because of his wedding? This is what my fiancé is worried about.

Message I am american married and living in france to a frenchman. I pay american taxes only on income I make when I work in America. I do not pay french taxes.

Americans that work in the EU are suppose to file US tax returns if they are making over 70,000 USD per year.

Message Sorry I am not able to answer your question. Although I do have a question that relates to your situation. Being a french woman I figured you could probably help me out. I'm a 17 year old high school student in the states. I am trying to trying through the Air Force Academy to major in European Studies and minor in French, possibly double minor in Spanish as well. Anyway, my goal is to work for the US military/government at etiher a European Embassy, hopefully the French Embassy because I would have a minor in French. The other options I was thinking of were working for NATO HQ in Belgium or working at some sort of job that deals with US-EU relations. Alright this next part is going to sound really stupid and immature, but I've got this thing for French women after seeing some clips of Alizee online. I must say French women have quite the package. I know that sounds really immature and superficial, but I could see myself marrying a French women, don't worry I wouldn't marry her just for her looks. Anyways my question is...

Do French women have a thing for American guys?

I know the US and France aren't on the best terms right now and I would almost definatley be associated with the US government/military. Would this make me unpopular in France, or Europe in general? with women?

I'm not conservative, but I want to serve my country. My ultimate goal is to in someway strengthen the bonds between Europe and the US. I can't say I agree with the American attitude of arrogance and indifference to lack of global support of its actions, but I hope to change that.

Sorry for not being able to answer your post and sorry for making such a long post, and I appreciate all of your advice. Thanks.

Respectfully, Rich Forslund
