Message: I need just a little information from an American who has already been through the entire marriage ordeal in France. I've been trying to figure out the legalities behind all of this and it's starting to get a little frustrating.

My question as of now is this:

Can I come on a carte de sejour and still be able to marry? Will I have to come back to the States at the end of the year when the visa expires to get some other visa to return to France or will the marriage entitle me to some sort of paperwork that will allow me to stay in the country?

This is a serious matter for me as I am about to, literally, leave everything here; house, vehicle, job... to be with my girlfriend of 12 years. It's time to build our family so if I will have to return to the U.S. I would like to know before I get into a situation where I am totally screwed.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me through this seemingly difficult task before me.

Joel
