Southern BurgundySaint-Amour-Bellevue

As the name would suggest Saint-Amour-Bellevue (literally Saint Love beautiful view) sits on a hill and offers views of the surrounding countryside. There are two Saint-Amours in France, the other simply, Saint-Amour is in the Jura department. Saint-Amour-Bellevue and Saint-Amour are about an hour's drive from each other.

Saint-Amour-Bellevue is a wine village. The local AOC wine is aptly named Saint-Amour. There is a local Caveau de Saint Amour, co-op winery selling Saint-Amour (red) and Beaujolais Blanc (white) wines. There are also 15+ local wineries where you can buy directly from the producer.

Saint-Amour-Bellevue is technically in Burgundy but its wine is considered part of the Beaujolais. Along with Saint-Amour, local wine growers produce the following AOC wines: Saint-Véran, Beaujolais Villages, Beaujolais, Bourgogne aligoté, Bourgogne, Mâcon, Bourgogne Passe-tout-grains, Coteaux Bourguignons, Crémant de Bourgogne, Bourgogne mousseux and Saône-et-Loire rosé.

Saint-Amour-Bellevue is a small village of about 550 centered around its 12th century Romanesque church. On the D686 road coming from the Caveau de Saint Amour is a nice viewpoint with a map. Follow the signs for St Amour - Bourg / Table d'Orientation. The village plays up its name and often has a village party on or around Valentine's Day. There is also a wine festival in the spring. Saint-Amour-Bellevue is on stage 8 of the Mâconnais-Beaujolais wine route. Ask at any tourist office for a map.
