Northern BurgundyChâteauneuf Burgundy Situated in the heart of Burgundy and sitting atop one of its many rolling hills château Châteauneuf, meaning new castle, is a true Chateau-fort (castle fort). It was not built like so many other Châteaux's as an expression of personal vanity, but to serve the military need of controlling the road from Dijon to Auton. Built in the 12th century by the lord of Chaudenay for his son. Châteauuneuf's most meaningful history takes place when it was owned my Philippe Pot. During his ownership Châteauneuf was transformed from a medieval house-fort into a Chateau-fort. He had the grand Logis, guest quarters rebuilt and furnished in the stile of the times with the most modern of comforts. He also had the chapel painted in colors red, black (the colors of his family) and gold (the color of Christ). During the revolution Châteauuneuf was taken by local community and its name was changed to Montranc, much was destroyed during this time. In the 1930s Châteauuneuf was given to the French state. Châteauneuf will take about 45 minutes to visit, should you take a guided tour. The inside of the château, only seen if you take a guided tour, has a resorted chapel on the ground floor and living quarters on the second. The rooms on the second floor are restored to look like they would have in the 17th and 18th centuries. If you don't take the guide tour you can still visit the guesthouse and one of the towers. Châteauneuf is best approached by car on the D18 road because of its wonderful view of the château. It is an hour's drive from Dijon and is accessible from either the A6 or A38 autoroute. Located near the junction of the A6 and the A38. Related Link: Sign-up for the FREE Americans in France newsletter. |
