Q & A

Subject: Unusual sites.

Question: In July I will have a group of engineering students and will be based in Strasbourg. I am looking for interesting sites to visit such as the sewers, catacombs, etc. It's fine if we have to travel a bit on the train. I'd appreciate any ideas. Thanks Jeff - I apologize. I erred in saying my engineering students would be in Strasbourg. They will be there only a week. They will be housed in Paris for almost a month so anything you could come up with around there would be preferable. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Answer: Glad to hear you only be a week in Strasbourg, as I can’t find any caves near it. Still your students might like the Cathedral of Strasbourg or the city architecture in general. In Alsace, houses and other buildings are not built in the same style as the rest of France. If you can try to go to the Ecomusée d’Alsace(Living Museum of Alsace, near town of Ungersheim), it will allow you and your students to see Alsacien architecture up close. In Paris there is a Musee des Egouts(Sewer Museum, Face au 93, quai d'Orsay - 75007 Paris Tél. : 01 47 05 10 29), I have never been to it but it might be what you’re looking for.

Something else that you might think about seeing is the St-Louis/Arzviller (Plan) Incline and Moselle on the Marne-Rhine Canal, about 15 miles north west of Strasbourg. It was explained to me as a lock system that allows barges to go up hill. It is southwest of Saverne, about midway between Chateau Haut-Barr on the east and Sarrebourg on the west. The Office de Tourisme(Tourist Office) in either Strasburg or Saverne should be able to direct you to it.
