Q & A

Subject: Thinking of moving to France for 6-9 months.

Question: Great stuff here but...My husband and I were thinking of moving to France for 6-9 months with our two children 3yrs and 1yr to explore another country.( Second choice is Italy) Is there a site or some type of reference material for Visas, paying US bills from France, Kids doctors, renting a house, things to know, cost of living expectations etc...

Answer:

Questions like your make me think I should write a book! Or at least have more information on my site. As for your questions here as my answers; Visas, try your nearest French consulate. They are going to have the most up to date and complete information.

Paying bills: What I have done, as have others I know, is just find someone you trust and have them pay your bills in the states.
Kids doctors: Health care in general in France is as good as in the states, if not better. It is by far much less expensive, as are drugs. The one problem you might have is that the vaccination schedule is different in France than in the states. We did not really have any problems with our son, who was 6 months old at the time of our move, but it did complicate things, if you have not see, http://www.americansinfrance.net/DailyLife/Health.cfm, on my web site.
Renting a house: That depends on when and where you move. It took us a month to find an apartment here in Strasbourg, we looked at the end of the summer. We went through two agencies at a cost of $150 each, they supplied us with a list of apartments and then it was up to us to see them.
Cost of living: In some respects it is less than the states, housing, education, and health care. But those savings then to be evened out by a 19.6 sales tax. The French have high taxation to fund excellent social benefits; of which I don't think you will be able to take advantage.
Something to think about, moving to another country, epically with kids is not going to be easy. My personal feeling is that it would not be worth moving to France for only 6-9 months, with all that is evolved, in time and energy.
