Subject: Short stay in Southern France.

Question: I am planning to move to France for about three months in the Fall with my friend. We are both 22 and one year out of college and are interested in living in the south of France for about three months. What would you say is the best way to find a relatively inexpensive apartment to rent for that amount of time? Is it best to just go over and look once we get there? Also, is it possible to get some type of job(Waitressing for example) for this amount of time without a work visa? We both know a decent amount of French. Thanks!

Answer: To start looking for apartments in Southern France try the web. Most French news papers have on-line editions. A good place to start would be Yahoo France at http://fr.dir.yahoo.com/actualites_et_medias/, also try http://www.bonjour.fr, it is a free newspaper that is allover France.
I don't think you will be able to find anything in France when you are in the states, that was our experience. If you see anything you like best to be on the spot to get it, but on-line you should be able to get an idea of price. We finally found our apartment going through two agencies, at a cost of 2000 FF.
I have no idea if you can find a job with out a work visa. I know that I am having a hard time finding a job, and I have a work visa. I know that in general finding a job in a restaurant is not very hard, especially during the tourist season.
