Q & A

Subject: Paris in the winter.

Question: My family (wife and two grown children, ages 20 and 21) had planned to visit Paris for the first time in September, but had to cancel. Now we are thinking of traveling around Christmas. I would like to know if this is a good idea. Is the winter weather very bad? Are there any special festivals around that time? Or should we wait until the weather is better? Thanks in advance for any advice you might have.

Answer: To answer your question let me give you the pros and the cons of traveling in France during Christmas time;
Pros- Less tourist/costs and no one goes to France for the weather. As you will be traveling in the off season, this could make your trip more enjoyable and less costly. At times Paris can be over run with tourist and this can take away from the experience, Notre Dame is so loud inside as to make almost un-seeable during the summer. The weather in France is rarely great(France tends to be very rainy and overcast), except for a few locations, Paris is not one, and so the weather in the winter will not be relatively that bad.
Cons- Closed tourist attractions and cold weather. Not everything that you would like to visit will always be open, you could also have a problem finding places to eat or stay if you are traveling outside of Paris or want to change locations in Paris. At best it will not get above the middle 50’s, at worst it could be below freezing. To get the best weather in France I would suggest the late spring or early summer.
I do not know of any festivals in Paris over the holidays, but I do know of one in Strasbourg, a Christmas market. In France during the summer time there are festivals in just about every town.
