Q & A

Subject: Garmisch to Paris

Question: My wife and I will be in Garmisch, Germany, with a rental car and would like to drive to Paris to spend two days before we have to return to the US. How long would this drive take us and any suggestions on route?

Answer: After looking at a map of Europe here is the route that I would use, Munich to Stuttgart to Karlsruhe to Strasbourg to Metz to Reims to Paris. I have never made that long a drive in one day but you might be able to. You might want to stop in either Strasbourg or Metz and spend the night and rest. I have a web site that talks a lot about driving in France , www.americansinfrance.net. You could drive through Switzerland as that might make a more direct route, but I don’t think that you will make good time. If you want to save money make sure to rent a car that runs on diesel, as it is much cheaper in France than gas. You also might think about taking a train, time might be the same if you do the drive in two days. Also in Paris you will not need a car, in fact it will cost you a lot to park a car in Paris.

If you need a place to stay have a look at this sites http://www.hotelformule1.com/formule1/index.html, http://www.etaphotel.com/etaphotel/index.html Formule 1 and Etap are a low cost but clean hotel chains that you might stay at. Last thing if possible don’t buy your diesel/gas on the French Autoroute, as it is very expensive, try to buy at supermarkets like Auchon, Round Pont, Atac, the price is better than at gas stations.
