Subject: Care for the Elderly
Date: Monday, October 02, 2006
Name: Debra
Message: Hello, Maybe someone can give us some advice, We are planning to retire hopefully to Evain in a few years time. We will be bringin my elderly mother with us. My concern is giving up Medicare. Here of course, if she should become infirm and need 24 hour care, Medicare would pay for a nursing home. We are wondering what our options in France are ,as we would not be able to afford long-term care out of pocket.

Someday we may need it ourselves!

Thanks for any suggestions.

Message Hi Jan, Well, mom right now is still very independant but if the day ever came where she wasn't I'd hate to have her somewhere where she felt isolated and couldn't speak the language . The worst part is that I'd read somewhere that care in a French nursing home could cost around 50 euros a day and I just don't think we could afford that. If we ever found the need to hire someone to live in or at least come into our home a good part of the day, I hope we would be able to afford that too. But yes, the most important think is having someone kind ,that you can trust. It's difficult contemplating wether to make the move or not and having to give up Medicare!

Thank you so much for your help Jan.

Message Dear Debra, It depends. Two factors are important: the condition of your mather and your expectations. In US average pay for caregiver is $3000 a month. For an English speaking person. In Europe things are different. I think you could find someone for less. The most important is the personality of a caregiver, someone warm and honest. Nothing else matters.

Message Hello Jan, Yes, I think that may indeed be a very good option to consider. I wonder how much people charge for those services in France??

Thanks for your suggestion, Debra

Message Hello, I have been running a Live in caregivers agency in US for many years. All caregivers were Eastern European, mostly Polish. I think you should concider hireing that option.
