Subject: Long-Stay Visa Complication
Date: Friday, September 15, 2006
Name: Laila
Message: Hello, Bonjour,

My husband and I have been waiting to move to Marseille for months. His offer to work there for a French company was finally approved by the local labor dept and sent to the appropriate consulate here in the States. However, my name was not on the file even though it was on the original application!

Does anyone know if it's possible for me, a US citizen, to enter France without a visa (tourist or short-stay) and then, within a 90-day period, leave France for the US to receive my long-stay visa once it's ready? Does anyone foresee complications at immigration? Or should I just apply for a short-stay visa no matter the delay?

Perhaps this is wishful thinking...Thanks for your responses!

Laila

Message As you may know, you do not need a Visa for any visit under 90 days. In normal circumstances, a long stay Visa is applied for BEFORE a stay of longer than 90 days is enbarked upon see www.sos-net.eu.org/

In many cases, an employer does not handle the paperwork for any spouse or family members who may be arriving with a hired employee. This is left up to the hired employee.

It isn't difficult, just contact your nearest Consulate and explain your situation so they can send you the correct Long Stay Visa forms. You can still go to France for 90 days or less while the process is taking place.

As a side, if your spouse has a good relationship with his new employer, he can always call them to ask for their assistance.

Best of luck
