I was hoping to buy a car before I arrive in France that I could pick up from the airport. Now it seems you can't buy a car without a permanent residence? Is this correct? I'm spending the winter in the Dordogne and the Aude with my dog looking for property (that is, if I can get the Boston Consulate to respond to my request for a visa appointment), and don't want to lease if I can avoid it (and even supposing they'd let me lease with a dog in tow)since by the time you've paid for that you could almost have bought a car. Can you buy a car based on a gite rental address?
Lord, this is complicated! Thanks to anyone who can answer this!

Hi again. Actually I'm not planning to return to the States. This is a problem since I won't even qualify for the buy back plans if I get my carte de sejour. I would ideally like to buy a new Renault to avoid the huge renting/ leasing fees I would face while trying to find a house to buy. It seemed like such a good idea to come over and spend the winter looking, then have my stuff shipped over, but this car thing has got me. Has anyone found a way to buy a car before having a permanent address?
Any help much appreciated.

Have you looked into buying a new car in France and selling it back to the vendor at the end of your stay? There are companies in France that cater to this type of arrangement. I'm not sure if it will help you, but I do know it's possible and could be worth investigating if you'll be in France several months, however it's too costly for short visits. Good luck and enjoy the Dordogne.
