ParisPlace des États-Unis

Statue of Lafayette and Washington in Place des États-Unis.

Place des États-Unis - United States Square, within walking distance of the Eiffel Tower got its name in 1881 when the American ambassador setup shop. Before that, Place des États-Unis was known as Place de Bitche, so named for the village of Bitche that during the Franco-Prussian War, bravely resisted the Prussian invasion.

Place des États-Unis has its roots when the once village of Passy created reservoirs in 1782. Those reservoirs moved in 1866 and the free space became a square. Of note in Place des États-Unis is the statue of Lafayette and Washington shaking hands and the memorial to the Americans that volunteered during WWI for France.

Between the Lafayette and Washington statue and Memorial to the American volunteers is Square Thomas Jefferson, a playground for local children.
