Southern BurgundyChalon-sur-Saône Chalon-sur-Saône might be the biggest town in Southern Burgundy, but it feels much smaller, almost like a village. The historic center has narrow medieval streets that wind their way in all directions. As the name suggests Chalon-sur-Saône sits on the banks of the Saône River (photos). The historic sights are on the Rive Droite, except for the William-Morey Hospital on l'île Saint-Laurent. You'll cross the Saône on Pont Saint-Laurent to reach the island. Chalon-sur-Saône offers its name to a small local wine region - Côte Chalonnaise. Things to do and see:
Chalon-sur-Saône is home to a French league basketball team - Élan Sportif Chalonnais. The team plays in the north of town in Le Colisée arena. Chalon-sur-Saône can be reached off the A6 Autoroute or the N6 national road runs along the Saône River through Chalon-sur-Saône. There is also a train station on the Paris-Lyon line.
